| Shootings February 2008 |

What do we do about the shootings? Since the Columbine shootings in 1999, our nation has been plagued with shootings in high schools, universities, shopping malls, churches, court houses, and city councils. They have escalated this year and it is only February. Law enforcement has publicly conceded, there is no way to prevent the random shootings, and it is difficult to prepare for them. In other nations the violence and bloodshed is commonplace and an every day occurrence, in Iraq car bombings, Pakistan rioting, Kenya mass genocide, Myanmar extreme forms of martial law, leading many to be killed. These kinds of things happen in many others countries and seem so common. However, at one point we in the United States were not used to such violence and bloodshed. Why the bloodshed? The spiritual decline in our country is causing the widespread increase of violence. The dam of morality and righteousness which has been holding back the flood of social destruction was cracked beginning in the 1960’s with the removal of prayer from our schools by the courts. Slowly, the steady drip has been widening the crack: legalized abortion, the sexual and drug revolution of the 60’s, the false anti-doctrine of “separation of church & state,” the public acceptance of homosexuality and gay marriage, which has even crept into the church. Presidential candidates who suddenly claim Christianity, even quoting bible scriptures to woo the “evangelical” vote, and at the same time promise to allow open homosexuality in the military, a stamp of approval on gay unions, and permission for minors as young as 12 years of age to have abortions without the consent of their parents. There is contempt for Christianity in the media, television movies; a wave of anti-Christianity is growing in our culture. The standard has been weakened, no wonder there are no restraints, the void of righteousness has been filled by the dark side of man’s human nature. Why? Because the devil is real: John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” I Peter 5:8 “Be sober; be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” Who is safe? What is the greatest measure of safety when the world seems to have an uncertain future? How can we prepare for a random shooting? The key is, Jesus is our safety, He is our protection, He promised abundant life, on earth and eternal life in heaven with him. There is only one way to be ready: John 14:6 ”Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
I John 3:8 “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” We must reach everyone with the gospel; we must rescue the potential victims from an eternity without Jesus. Jesus loves you, and has a bigger plan! Trust Him; it is worth your soul…! |
