A Touch From Above Ministries

Mission America - Day 2
Dateline May 26, 2009. Waking up early and my body screaming, “Ouch,” from the rock mattress, I was stiff as a board. Getting out of bed with the mission in mind, we started packing our gear. Jill always faithful to make coffee went hunting for some wood, started a fire and pulled out the old campfire coffee pot and before you knew it, you could hear it perking. Continuing to pack as the coffee was brewing; Jill served up the coffee, smiled and said, “Oops, we forgot the sugar and the cream. Like we forgot the food the day before,” we all just laughed. Drinking our coffee, we prayed, thanking God for the day, when a lady came walking up, she was from Israel and her husband was from England. In her hands, she had a couple cans of soup and cans of tuna. She said, “We’re flying out this afternoon,” and asked, “Would you ladies like to have this food?” We all smiled and knew it was an open door to share Jesus. She smiled as we told her, God used her to supply for us breakfast. She said, “Want to know the real miracle? I asked a few other trailers before I ASKED YOU AND THEY REFUSED.” Isn’t God amazing? We opened up a can of soup and had soup with the coffee, what a breakfast!

As we were finishing up the last minute coffee, the team started packing the truck. Everyone scurrying to clean up the camp, Jill said, “Pastor, you need to come and look at this.” As she took me to the side of the trailer and said, “Look!” Sure enough, it was another tire going flat, “Oh no, not another tire.” Jill pulled out the air pump and started to pump it up. I told everyone “Hurry, load everything up!” Realizing we had to find a place fast to fix the tire, it was losing air fast. Now remember, we were nowhere close to a major town. Leaving the KOA Campground, I realized I could only drive 15 miles an hour. Someone said there might be a little station just across the overpass. We headed in that direction, only to discover, a little hole in the wall gas station and store straight out of the “Twilight Zone,” complete with a demoniac manifesting when he saw, “JESUS CHRIST,” on our trailer. Jill pulled out the pump and filled up the tire again, I asked the lady, “Ma’am, we have to find something, isn’t there something somewhere close so we don’t’ have to go down the freeway?” She said, “Maybe a mile down the frontage road,” she didn’t seem too enthused.

Off we went down the frontage road, looking and praying, “Lord, we need a miracle, another one!” A mile down the road we found a service station, a young man by the name of Shane, he looked at us and saw that great big trailer and had a strange little smirk and a different look in his eye. I walked in and said, “Hello, I need some help, can you help me with my tire?” He said, “Give me a little time, I’m working on this customer right now, it will be about 10 minutes.” The other gentleman who getting his tire fixed was a real good old cowboy. He was a horse trainer and horse breaker; he stood and looked at me, right in the eye. (By the way we were in Black Canyon City, Arizona). All three of us just kind of looked at each other; the silence was deafening. I started up the conversation, so I could find the opportunity to witness, I said, “So sir! How long have you been training horses?” He said, “Ever since I was a little one.” I asked, “Do they call you the Horse Whisperer?” He looked outside and saw the trailer and turned back in and took a spit of his tobacco, he was chewing. I said, “Pretty nice trailer, huh?” He just looked at me, nodded his head and spit again. I said, “My name is Dr. Luauna, we’re A Touch From Above Ministries, a Christian Missionary Team, going across the entire United States of America to share Jesus. How about you cowboy? Do you go to church?” I think he was a little shocked. He said, “I believe in God,” and he spit again. I smiled and said, “Sir, the devil believes in God and shudders, but do you know Jesus as your Savior?” He said, “Well, I kinda know him,” and spit again, I moved out of the way. I said, “Sir, kinda knowing Him and knowing Him are two different things. The Bible says, you must be born again.”

I noticed Shane glancing at me now and then through the entire conversation, I said, “How about you Shane?” I figured I might as well drag him into it. He looked at me with those piercing blue eyes, I could tell, he had been hurt, broken and was just a little bit angry inside. He just kind of smirked and said nothing. I continued on my conversation with the cowboy and told him, “Well, cowboy, Jesus wants to be your Lord, can I pray with you right now?” He was getting nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof, he didn’t want to deny Christ and he didn’t want to accept Christ. It’s hard being a wild bronco rider and walking on a tightrope, I said, “Sir, you gotta make a decision, that’s probably why I’m here today.” He kind of smiled and said, “Maybe I’ll just go to the other place where all my friends are, so we can hang out and party.” I said, “There is no party in hell, its total darkness with the wailing and gnashing of teeth and God will bring to your remembrance, this, 26th of May 2009, when a wild woman preacher, with a trailer announcing JESUS CHRIST and four single women, with a Mission to touch America crossed your path today and you refused.” Just about the time I finished that sentence, old Shane jumped in.

As Shane was finishing up the cowboy’s truck, he said, “That ain’t the God I know, I don’t believe that God would send anybody to hell. I don’t believe there is a hell” I said, “You’re right Shane, God doesn’t want to send anyone to hell, that’s why He sent Jesus to die on the cross; but we have to receive Him as Savior.” Then I explained to him about the plan of being born-again. Shane said, “I don’t believe in all that stuff, I don’t believe that Jesus is the only way.” The Holy Spirit instantly spoke to my heart, telling me that Shane had a Jehovah Witness background, I said, “So, Shane, are you a Jehovah Witness? Because it sounds to me like you still have a lot of that doctrine in you.” He said, “I used to be, but I found God in my own way.” I said, “Shane, Jesus loves you,” and I shared my testimony how my husband was murdered and how I was a single mother raising two children, that softened his heart, he said, “I’m a single dad, raising my little boy, 12 years old.” I said, “I have great respect for you being such a good dad.”

I could feel the Holy Spirit softening his heart, God sent me there for Shane, he later told me, “I used to be a Christian, but all that religion turned me off.” I said, “Shane, that religion turned Jesus off, He loves you and cares a lot about you, I want to leave you my book and you read my story, I’m a miracle of God’s grace.” By this time the cowboy had already left and it was just Shane and I, the Holy Spirit was doing a deep work in Shane, he finished up my tire and I asked him, “What do I owe you?” He looked at me with those screaming blue eyes and waved his hand, motioning me to get out of there, he would cover the expense. I shook his hand and thanked him and told him there was a really good church in Flagstaff, not caught up with a bunch of religion and laws, I gave him the address and we said our goodbyes.

Driving down the road with confidence, “Whew, yeah, the tires fixed!” We got no more than 35 minutes out and on a major pass in the middle of nowhere, tire number 3 now losing air. We pulled over on the freeway I looked at the tire and said, “Lord, I know we must be on the right track, tire number three?” Jill pulled out the faithful little tire pump and filled it up. We jumped in the truck fast because we needed to get to the next town; we were on a steep hill, so we could not change the tire. Crawling up the mountain and praying all the way, “Lord, keep the air in the tire, Lord, keep the air in the tire!” There was not a town in sight, but thank God for Dr. Laurie’s gift before we left, the GPS! Beverly, the detective, went to work again, in the second car, following the trailer. Finding another location the only thing, it was going to take us to Camp Verde, let’s go. Pulling into the tire shop with tire problem number 3, the worker from Tire Pro named Craig said, “Ma’am, come look, this tire is going right now as well.” That was tire number 4! I asked, “Why are these tires dying on me?” He looked at the dates and said, “Ma’am these are old tires.” I asked, “How old?” He said, “2004 and 2005,” and he showed me the dates. I said, “Oh-oh, that’s not good.” I got on the phone and called back to the trailer company, I mean, after all it was our 4th tire. They did everything they could to help, they called the trailer manufacturer, who then called me directly. We worked out a plan and they purchased four brand new tires for me. PRAISE THE LORD!

As our tires were being fixed, I got to share with the owner of Tire Pro, Don Hanks about our mission, in spite of our bad tires, how God worked miracle after miracle. He was pretty excited about our mission as I took him to the website, he smiled and he asked, “You girls had lunch yet?” He didn’t know we had a half a cup soup and a cup of coffee before our multi-tire episode. I looked at the clock and realized it was 1:30 p.m., can you imagine all morning and three tires out? I said, “No, but we’ll get lunch after all these tires are on.” He looked at me and said, “I want to buy you all lunch.” He said, “Go across the street, there’s a little restaurant there, lunch is on me.” I smiled, as I thought. “Truly, God has a plan.” I said, “Thank you sir, that is very kind of you.” They finished up our tires and we went across the street. I guess I have to admit we were all hungry, carrot and water the night before, a half a cup of soup and coffee in morning. I think we just might get skinny on this trip.

Sitting down at the restaurant there was a gentleman and his wife that kept looking at us as we had on our Mission America t-shirts, I finally felt compelled to introduce myself. Finding out he was a Christian, and a cyclist and very excited about our Mission; they joined us at our table. What a wonderful couple! We were sharing about the goodness of God and all that He did in a short time. He shared how he wanted to bicycle across the U.S. and tell everyone about Jesus. I just laughed and I said, “Life is short, do it!” Finding out they lived in Prescott, I felt compelled, I knew it was God’s plan showing me to go to Prescott, Arizona; it would be our first tent meeting. It was a confirmation! Before we left San Diego, Dr. Laurie, said, “I own a lot in Prescott, Arizona, you can use it for your tent meetings whenever you would like.” Amazing how God works! This couple said, “We’re going to come to your tent meeting, do you need help?” We gave each other a hug and went to say goodbye, he reached out for his wallet and said I want to invest in your mission, he put $40 in my hand, he didn’t know he was paying for our KOA Campground overnight stay. Blessing to him, and his wife, I said a prayer for God to bless them. We would see them when we set up our tent.

Once I made the decision for our Prescott Tent Meeting, we started planning. We called Dr. Laurie for the exact address for the lot, Beverly went to work seeing if she could find a men’s Christian home in the city. Praise God, we found, Church on the Street Men’s home, the gentleman, Wes did not hesitate at our request, he said, “Give me a call when you need the men and tell me how many you need.” Praise God!

Off to the KOA Campground in Flagstaff. Let me not forget! Ariella, the Jewish woman who prayed to receive Jesus as Savior before her return trip to England; Mr. Floyd an elderly man at Crusty’s Pizza; Two fourteen year old girls in the bathroom at the Campground; and Cynthia who needed prayer for her beautiful 5 year old daughter whom she adopted, the little girl was oppressed by rejection and the curse of generations. God is good! P.S. I’m still gripping the steering wheel.
